Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This course is designed to serve as an introduction to basic concepts and theories in the study of language and culture. The various branches of the study of language and culture will be introduced and discussed in class lectures, with particular attention being paid to issue of globalisation. The more specific objectives of this course are: * Recognize the fundamental relationship between language and culture. * Describe current perspectives on the nature of language and culture from an applied linguistic context

Syllabus:

Students will gain an indepth knowledge of the relationship between langauge and culture. The course will begin by introducing the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and will then look at a further three core sections, namely: (1) Culture and language in use (2) Culture, language and the individual (3) Culture, language and society

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Upon successful completion of this module the student should be able to: * Competently assess evidence and articulate theories concerning the relationship between language and culture * Show an understanding of the basic theories of linguistic politeness * Effectively evaluate the position of the English Language in the global new economy * Understand the connection between language socialisation and language acquisition

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Upon successful completion of this module the student should be able to: Demonstrate an appreciation of the link between language and culture

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Upon successful completion of this module the student should be able to: Make a short presentation in class on a key issue discussed in lectures

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The course involves a total of 3 contact hour per week. A given topic will be introduced in the first lecture of the week, this will then be discussed and evaluated within smaller group tutorials and the topic will be concluded in the final group lecture of the week. The students will be provided with materials which will enable them to carry out further learning outside of the classroom setting.
